3rd Eurocontrol
Innovative Research Workshop

“I’ve
spent two refreshing days at the EEC and heard a lot of innovative ideas from
young students” said Jan Van Doorn, Chairman of the Innovative Research
Advisory Board, when closing the 3rd
Eurocontrol Innovative Research Workshop on Friday the 10th December
2004, at the Eurocontrol Experimental Centre. More than 150 visitors (from
industry, universities, software houses, R&D laboratories, Small and Medium
Enterprises, air navigation service providers, airports and airlines) from
several transport domains and from more than 20 European attended the 2 day workshop.
Advanced ATM concepts, emerging technologies applied to ATM, fundamental research,
Eurocontrol coordinated actions (CARE) and the Eurocontrol innovative research
strategy were presented and discussed. At the exhibition, 15 external partners
presented their innovative research activities focusing on emerging man machine
interfaces mixing animation and sound; and on airport ground applications. There
were many fruitful discussions and exchanges of ideas between the attendees. The
goals of this workshop and exhibition, to bring together multi-disciplinary
experts from various domains, not only ATM, and to promote Eurocontrol innovative
activities, were fully achieved. We believe this workshop will soon become a
key event for European innovative research in ATM.
The
centre was also pleased to welcome Ms Courtel, President of the French Ecole Pratique
des Hautes Etudes (EPHE) Sorbonne who, together with Mr. Andribet, Experimental
Centre Core Business Manager, signed an agreement to create the first Eurocontrol Joint Research Lab, part of the centre’s
initiative to build up a network of universities to carry out backbone thinking
for ATM. This first European Joint Research Lab, called in French Unite Mixte Europeenne de Recherche, will
be specializing in the modelling of the ATM system in which human cognition
will be modelled and analyzed from a complex system modelling perspective. This new Joint Research Lab is located at the Experimental
Centre, and is called the Laboratory for Complex System Modelling &
Cognition (CSMC). As part of the agreement, five senior research scientists and
professors from EPHE are partially seconded to the laboratory to conduct
research and to supervise PhD students’ work, and Experimental Centre staff
will gradually increase their teaching activities at EPHE.
Strong
emphasis was given to the alignment of the entire Innovative Research work
programme with the recommendations of
ACARE Strategic Research Agenda 2 (SRA2).
