Stakeholder
Survey: Well Tuned to Needs, but all is not rosy ... The 2002
edition of the Stakeholder Survey shows that our activity portfolio is, in
general, well tuned to stakeholder expectations and the services provided are
of very good quality. However, there are some very troubling criticisms, the
worst of which is our apparent inability to ensure the operational application
of research results.

Are
Europe's Air Routes Costing the Earth? This study shows that the
European air route structure leads to distances flown of up to 9% more than
would be the case if aircraft could fly directly. In addition to its impact on
the environment, the extra fuel burnt could be costing the airlines in the
order of 1,000 to 2,500 million euros per year.

ESCAPE Platform Used
for Live Operation ESCAPE is the centre's
real-time simulator. With the addition of interfaces to real data sources, it
is often used in control centres for pre-operational trials of new controller
tools. Earlier this year it was used, for the first time, for live operations.

Cockpit Simulators in 3 Countries
Connected Simultaneously to ESCAPE Platform for Mediterranean Free Flight (MFF)
Simulations The 3 high fidelity cockpit simulators were located in
Rome, Brétigny and Amsterdam. The objective of the exercise was to study
the impact on flight crews of Airborne Separation Assistance Systems (ASAS)
instructions. More...

Airport Collaborative Decision Making
Aims to Improve Turn-Round at European Airports leading to a more accurate flow of data to and from the CFMU (Central
Flow Management Unit) concerning arrival and departure times. The CFMU will be
able to use this information to enhance the management of slot times and
en-route capacity. More...
Environmentally Sustainable Airport Operations - Web
Site Under Construction The ESAO project is developing a web
site called 'SOPHOS', which will act as a central store of environment related
resources and as a communication platform. The aim of SOPHOS is to help airport
stakeholders (airlines, airports, ANSPs) to make more informed decisions when
considering environmental options. More
Real Time Simulations Confirm that Redesigned
Airspace will Allow Enlarged Military Area A modified Military Training Area will be implemented in
Germany in November 2003. This area, known as TRA LAUTER, will be increased in
size which will result in a major change to the routing of civil air traffic
around the area. New routings and associated ATC procedures were simulated in
the 6 States Real Time Simulations. Full report available. More...

Opinion(s):
Alternative
Enablers For Airborne Separation Assurance Systems This is an
appeal to the ADS-B community to change its way of thinking, to realise that
Mode-S Extended Squitter and VDL 2 are realities, and to build an optimised
system around these available components. It is strongly recommended to mandate
Mode-S Extended Squitter, and to promote the idea to augment it with a VDL 2
based Traffic Information System in Contract (TIS-C) mode.
